Notes for JANE "MOTHER ELLIOTT" KERR:
Lure & Lore of Limestone County.
"Old Mothe r Elliott was formerly an old Presbyterian, an if there are degrees in heaven, she is high up in glory in that happy land. She lived one mile from town on the Huntsville Road, and was quite an old lady when I was but a boy, but I shall never forget her regular attendance at church, night and day, and almost regardless of weather with her lantern of dark nights, and generally alone...She was ever on errands of mercy, to delight the sick and afflicted, and her chief delight was to do good...Would that we all were imitators of Mother Elliott!"John Tanner wrote the foregoing in his memories of Athens in 1876.

Death Notice: Limestone News 11 June 1875
The Rev. James C. Elliott was born 1799 and died June 5 1875. For fifty years he was actively engaged preaching the gospel as a minister of the Cumberland Presbytarian Church. Although denied the privileges of obtaining an education he has accomplished great good. Throughout Middle Tennessee and North Alabama he was well known in a thousand households will the memory of Uncle Jimmy be cherished and the story of his unaffected piety handed down from generation to generation. Out of a large family he lives only a widowed daughter to mourn his death. His wife and eight children have gone before. Many more distinguished men are less deserving a biography, and we have no doubt that the church will preserve the record of Uncle Jimmies labors in some appropriate and durable form.

Death Notice: The Athens Post 11 June 1875
Rev. J.C. Elliott died at his residence one mile south of Athens about 2 o'clock last Saturday morning and was buried in the new cemetery the same day, the funeral being preached at the Cumberland Presbytarian Church by Rev. G.W. Mitchell. His career was a long and eventful one and now that the storm of life has blown away we trust the good old man is reaping a rich reward.

Notes for GEN. HIRAM HARRISON HIGGINS:
Lure and Lore of Limestone County:
It was characteristic of Hiram Higgins to answer calls of a military nature. In 1847 he raised a company (Company F, 13th U.S. Infantry) for service in the Mexican War, drilling his men on the Athens public square twice a day. On May 29th of that year the Company left for Mexico and returned to Athens in the following year. On 1 August 1861, Higgins Company of Confederate Bricks was sworn into the Confederate States Army. It became Company A of the 40th Tennessee Infantry and later Company B of the 54th Alabama Infantry. Higgins was apparently captured at Island Ten of the Mississippi River, for in a letter written to a cousin on 16 October 1872, he stated that he had been imprisoned at Johnson's Island, and it is known that the members of the 54th Alabama were captured at Island Ten. The inscription on Higgins Tombstone reads Gen. H.H. Higgins, and John Tanner road in 1876 that Higgins was a gallant soldier in the Confederate Service and was promoted for meritorious conduct to Brigadier General. He was commission Brigadier General of the state militia during the course of the war. Hiram Higgins 16 May 1802 - 12 May 1874 was the son of William B. and Catherine Higgins Higgins who were married at Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, KY in 1799. Catherine died when Hiram Higgins was four years of age, and William Higgins then married Nancy Buchanan, who proved to be an excellent step-mother, and Hiram stated that he would not have changed her for any woman on this green earth. It is possible that William Higgins came to Limestone County with the Lane family, for the two families were intermarried in KY. William was in Limestone County by 1818 for in that year, according to the history of Dr. Thomas Stith Malone, the father of our distinguished architect Col. H.H. Higgins, built a two story edifice in Cottonport containing 400,000 brick, the first brick edifice in the country, and the next year 1819 one in Mooresville. William Higgins learned the brick laying and plastering trade from his English brother-in-law James Hart. The love of building was inherited by Hiram Higgins, and he is credited with the design of many of the most distinguished buildings in the town of Athens. It is possible that he studied the architectural handbooks while he was in school in KY, for it required more than mere brick laying skill to erect such a Federal gem as the Vining-Vasser-Lovvorn house, for instance. When Joseph Wood offered his house for sale in 1836, he stated that it was built by Hiram Higgins. Higgins designed the Limestone County Courthouse, completed in 1835; and subsequently those at Moulton, AL, and Pontotoc, MS. He designed Founders Hall and the facade on the Beaty-Mason house, and it is also believed that he erected the Sloss-Pettus and the Donnell houses. Just when Hiram Higgins built his own house is a matter of conjecture, but it was probably about 1850, since John Tanner stated that Higgins had just improved his home, when he died in 1874. There is evidence of an old brick yard across the street from the site of the Higgins house, and it is possible that he made the brick for several structures on that location.

Athens State College A Definitive History 1821-1991
Hiram Harrison Higgins
Hiram Harrison Higgins 1802-1874 was born in Mt. Sterling, KY. An interesting sidelight to local history is found in Presbytarian History, which shows that Hiram Harrison Higgins was born in 1802 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co., KY and that in the same decade Robert Beaty founder of Athens was one of the financial supporters of the Rev. Joseph Howe, of the Little Mountain Presbytarian Church congregation, Mt. Sterling. Hiram was the son of William B. Higgins, early teacher, builder, and brickyard owner, and his first wife, Catherine who died when Hiram was four. His father's second wife, Nancy Buchanan, became his "beloved" mother. Three generations of the Higgins family operated the brickyard and engaged in construction of brick buildings - William Higgins, his son Hiram Harrison Higgins and his grandson Hiram Aaron Higgins operated the family brickyard for many decades and together planned and directed the construction of many fine and substancial buildings in Northern Alabama and Mississippi. Tanner referred to Higgins and son Hiram as brick makers, while acknowledging their skill as builders. In 1861, Hiram Higgins Company of Confederate Bricks was sworn into the Confederate States Army. H.H.Higgins knowledge of architecture grew from apprenticeship with his father, who had built their own home, and his work indicates that he also studied books on Palladian architecture, as had Thomas Jefferson before he built Monticello. William B. Higgins, the father of our distinguished architect, had built the first brick construction in the area in 1818. The father had built their own house. Both father and son are credited with the brick making as well as the design and often the building of other well built and long lasting houses in the area, both frame and brick, although the son became much more famous as an architect. The ante-bellum home at Washington and Beaty in Athens was advertised in 1836 as having been built by Hiram H. Higgins. Joseph Wood, the owner, had bought the lots in 1831, and either the house was already on the lots or he had it built there. His most famous building, and likely the most costly, is Founders Hall, on the Athens State College campus, designed when he was 40. It is now one of the best known historic buildings in AL. Most of his earlier large designs are know vanished the 1834 Limestone County Courthouse, and, between 1835 and 1850, other court houses moulton in Scotsboro in AL and Pontotoc in MS and other large public buildings in Northern AL and MS. Around 1845 he designed the remodeling of the Beaty and the Jack Russell homes both on South Beaty Street, adding columns and other features. Owners of several ante-bellum homes in Athens have been told that he had a part in those designs. In 1870 Gen. H.H.Higgins was visiting in Athens looking well...now making his home in Corinth, MS, where he has been superintending the erection of an extinsive cotton factory. He died in his Athens home in 1874, a frame home he had built and was renovating at the time of his death. That house, later owned outside the family, burned in 1911. He had died two years before Tanner wrote in his column: Col. Higgins was for many years one of most useful and honored citizens. From a boy he displayed a foundness for military life. He commanded a Company in Mexico during the war and acquitted with great honor and credit during that campaign. He was a gallant soldier in the Confederate Service and was promoted for meritorious conduct to Brigadier General.
A sister Miss Louisa Higgins, conducted a reputable female school for a while in Athens, between 1825-1840, and subsequently taught in the Female Institute, in which she also gave satisfaction, according to Tanner. He married Rebecca Elizabeth Elliott called Elizabeth in Athens, Al in 1828. She was the sister of the Rev. James Elliott of Athens. Their children born between 1829-1844 were Emily Jane born 1829, Mary Lane born 1830, Samuel Bennett born 1831, Nancy G. born 1832, Hiram Aaron born 1833, David Elliott born 1839 and Catherine Kerr born 1842. Mary and Nancy Higgins are shown in 1843 at the age of 13 and 11, in the list of enrollees at the Athens Female Institute. In the college archives is a report, sent from Institute president Rivers to Higgins, citing the accomplishments of these two girls and areas in which improvement was needed. Son Bennett died in 1869, after a lingering illness, in his 38th year. He had been a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army during the war. Son Hiram Aaron died in 1878 at 43. Mary Lane married Reuben/Rubin W. Johnson and died at 40, in September 1870. Jane and later Nancy, taught at the Athens Female College. The 1860 Census shows the children grown and most of them out of the home: Hiram H. Higgins, 48, architect, born in KY, heading a household consisting of his wife Elizabeth W., 54, born in TN; daughter Nancy G., 26; and daughter Mary L., 29, with her husband and son Rubin Johnson, 29, printer, and Matthew 2. His obituary reported that Gen. H.H.Higgins, "the old soldier and esteemed citizen of our town, has passed away."
